Urumqi Builds Rail-Air Combined Gateway to the West
Recently, the nation's first rail-air combined cross-border train, the "Guangdong-Xinjiang Express," completed its 66-hour, 4,500 km rail journey from Guangzhou to Urumqi Sanping Railway Station. From there, over 70 tons of cargo were flown by air freight charter directly to European countries. This successful launch marks a major breakthrough for Urumqi in developing a westbound rail-air open corridor.
Previously, cross-border e-commerce goods from South China mainly relied on road transport to Urumqi for consolidation before air shipment to Europe. Long distances and weather disruptions made timing and costs unpredictable.
The "Guangdong-Xinjiang Express" leverages Urumqi's land and air port advantages, integrating rail and air transport with South China's logistics hubs to form a "Guangzhou shipper-Urumqi transfer-direct Europe" rail+air logistics network. This model improves transport time by over 15% and is expected to save more than 10 million yuan in annual logistics costs.
